The main difference between us and an online DIY lien service is that we are a law firm, meaning an attorney prepares your lien documents for you. When you use online services, you are simply filling in an online form, and don’t receive the benefit of having an attorney review your lien documents to make sure everything is correct.

A bond is like an insurance policy — it’s a pool of money set aside to pay contractors in case they aren’t paid on a job. Usually, government jobs (for example, a job for a city or state) will require the general contractor to maintain a payment bond for the benefit of its subcontractors. If a subcontractor isn’t paid by the general contractor, they can submit a claim to be paid from the bond. If your job had a bond, this information is usually in your contract.

Tip: Bonds usually only apply on government jobs (jobs on city, state, or federal property). Mechanics liens usually apply on private jobs (land not owned by a city, state, or other governmental body).
